2017 Bible Reading Plan
So a new year has started. Kids are back in school. The weather is cold (at least in the Northwest it is right now). And you are a few days in to the goals that you set.If you are a follower of Jesus, no doubt you have heard at some point that reading the bible consistently is important. It's the Holy Bible. It's inspired scripture. It points us to Jesus. It reminds us of God's great plan of salvation, His love for us, His rescue of us and how we live in relationship with Him and others. We all know it is important. But many times in talking with Jesus followers they admit that their study of scripture is inconsistent at best. They want to, but they don't have time to make it a daily reality. Others will communicate that they just don't know where to start. The biggest obstacle that will keep you from encountering Jesus through studying scripture is a simple one: failing to have a plan.
The biggest obstacle that will keep you from encountering Jesus through studying scripture is a simple one: failing to have a plan.
We all have the same amount of time in a day (24 hours to be exact). This is true, no matter if you are leading a fortune 500 company or if you are the lead flute player in your middle school band. Planning time is one key. And it's a big key.But also having a plan for how we are going to read the bible is also vital. For a number of years now I have read different plans and even used different translations of the bible to keep it fresh. This year I wanted to do something new. I made the decision to create a plan that would slow me down and saturate me in the New Testament. Since I spend a lot of my life interacting with and teaching scripture (I am a Pastor), it is vital for me that I find ways to not allow my time with it to become routine, an assignment or stagnate. This is important to me because before I am a "Pastor", I am first and foremost a follower and disciple of Jesus. I need the truth of scripture, not just so I can teach it better to others, but so that God can continue to work in and transform me.
I need the truth of scripture, not just so I can teach it better to others, but so that God can continue to work in and transform me.
This year Amber and I plan on walking through the New Testament (and along the way moving through Proverbs and Psalms as well). A few friends are joining with us. If you have a plan - stick with it. Make it your goal to encounter Jesus in a fresh way each day! If you don't have a plan, feel free to join us!No matter what your plan is, never lose sight of the fact that God desires to speak to you, strengthen you and equip you for His mission through the gift of His Holy Word.
