THOUGHT DETOX: Part 1
There is no doubt about it. The single most influential thing in your life and in mine is our thoughts. No one talks to you more than you. No one critiques you more than you. No one processes things with you more than you. Our thoughts are a constant part of life, and yet we often allow them to hold us captive and control our outlook each day.
The solution?
Thought Detox.
If you have ever gone through any kind of detox process, you know that the goal is to rid the body of things that don't belong and are not healthy for you. If it is vital for our physical health (which it is), how much more important is it to make sure we intentionally take time to detox our thought life?
You may be thinking (which, again shows the importance of what we are talking about...), "How do I actually gain control, let alone detox something when I feel like I am not in control of it?" The reality is that our thoughts are extremely hard to control - especially if we only rely on willpower or our own strength. We may have momentary victories, but we probably won't experience lasting victory.
With that said, here are two keys to help us in the area of our thoughts:
Our thoughts need an ANCHOR
If you want to change your thinking, or rid your life of toxic thinking, you need to have an anchor - something, more specifically Someone that will bring strength and security. You need something that is stronger than you, that can hold you in place when your thought life gets windy. We need to be connected to something that does not move - even when our thoughts are in constant motion. My Anchor is Jesus.
Our thoughts need DIRECTION
If our desire is to detox and move toward health, it means our thoughts need direction. We can't just have a good defense without also providing a good offensive strategy. This is why establishing a direction for your thoughts is so important. When it comes to detoxing your thoughts, you need a good game plan. I believe the best game plan is provided in the Word of God.
Below you will find a great anchor and direction for your thoughts. I would encourage you to memorize this scripture and think (see what I did there?) about the significance of each part.
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
Philippians 4:8 (NLT)
Fix your thoughts... (create an anchor and set your direction towards thoughts that are)
True
Honorable
Right
Pure
Lovely
Admirable
Excellent
Worthy of praise
If you do this, I would be willing to bet that you will begin to experience a detox in your thinking. There will be new health, new vitality and new clarity. Today, I encourage you to take this anchor and direction and begin to experience your thought detox.
