Social Distancing?
I heard a thought today that I really liked. But first...
The call to action with slowing the spread of the Coronavirus and the resulting COVID-19 has been a clear and important one:
Wash your hands
Stay home
Practice social distancing.
We are all in this together. And here is the thought - as humans, as we are in this together, maybe there is a better term to use than social distancing. What we need to practice is physical distancing.
The reason for this post?
SOCIAL DISTANCE or PHYSICAL DISTANCE?
I believe the difference between these two is important. This isn't a time to disconnect or distance socially, but it is a time to do so physically.
We need each other at a whole new level. Your friend or co-worker needs an encouraging phone call from you. That family member needs an encouraging text. They need your social interaction without breaking the important physical distancing that we all need to be a part of. Don't stop connecting in community, even though "community" looks different now.
Maybe we should change the language a bit - because language matters.
I hope as we create healthy physical distancing, that we will not sacrifice healthy social interaction.
Connect with someone today. Let them know they are loved. Let them know they matter.
